New release candidate coming up?

you can only download the nightly builds if you're registered in the forum. That's been bugging me for a while now: as unregistered visitor you cannot see the "developer forums", so you don't have any chance to see the progress this project makes. At least the "nightly builds" forum should definitely be free for unregs, too.

Actually I had the same problem trying to explain others that they needt to be registered. Honestly, no registration should be needed for viewing the forum. Posting is another history.

Usually "Release Candidate" implicates that the version is almost as good as "the real thing". I remember e.g. Firefox 1.5 RC2 or GCC 4.1 RC2 even became the "official" Firefox 1.5/GCC 4.1 without any change. Whereas here after RC2 there even is a Code-Completition overhault and other big changes.

Everyone knows that the past numbering version was flawed, RC introducing new features, etc, and nothing can be done with that, it's past.
The current problem is that I haven't seen discussions on how to procede from the next release (I hope that comes after the release).

I have seen requests lately on a roadmap, and I think that defining clear (small or broad) goals, will benefit from more contributions of other developers.
I just remember when rick organized the unicode conversion. At that moment lot's of devs advocated to that task, and in few days it was done.

I highly agree with what's being said here.

I have a hard time trying to promote this product as people can't download a decent version.

RC2 is highly crippled to the point where it's unproductive to use. However the current builds are the exact opposite and a joy.

It's really hurting the project by not releasing at least another RC.

Vampyre_Dark:
RC2 works great. Best IDE I ever used. I think saying you can't DL a decent version of it is a slight exageration.

I agree with what people are saying about info. There is a huge rift between the users and the developers. I visit this place at least 5 times a day and I still don't know what is going on with Code::Blocks.

You call your dev forums, Developers Only, which implies you don't want us users in here, and I almost never peek in here. OSS doesn't imply that every user wants to be actively involved in the development process. Us users often post about something in the user part of the forum, and we get pointed into this part as if you expect us to be posting here, even though we aren't developers.

Why not do a monthly update? Every month write about what has happened with Code::Blocks, The Known Issues (and if there are plans to fix them), what features are being worked on, and the outlook on when a new release might be coming.

Short answer: because nobody has the time to do it.

Longer answer: Most of this is in fact done, to some extent. We only don't have one single place where all information is collected. Until we have a better infrastructure for managing that information, this is very tedious. Right now, what we have available is the forum, the WiKi, and static HTML pages. None of this is suitable for managing content like this. Yes, we know about a better solution, and we are working on one, but again, we have too little time for everything.

In order to get version 1.0 out, we have a schedule which is filled to the last slot for the next 4 months, and the more administrative work we have to do in addition, the less likely we will be able to follow our schedule.

Vampyre_Dark:
No time to make just one post on the forum and sticky it? I'm not talking about a huge undertaking, which huge lists of things. I'm talking about maybe 2 paragraphs just to let us know what's going on. Mandrav posts what's on his mind about CodeBlocks, then Thomas can post, then lock it and leave it. Anyone who comes into the forums can immediately see what is going on with Code::Blocks.
