Help on "Windows Applications"
« on: April 10, 2011, 10:21:56 pm »
Good morning, colleagues.

I am interested in developing in C++. For this I chose two IDE, which are "Dev C++" and "CodeBlocks".

I need a tutorial to teach me to develop a form as the image. For now I just need the interface; later I would analyze to read and feed data into a data file.

Can you say me any methodology?

I know that Dev C++ has "File - New - Project - Basic - Windows Application", but I can not move beyond, if I´m going right.

Also in CodeBlocks is "File - New - Project - Win32 GUI Project" and "File - New - Project - wxWidgets Project" and "wxSmith" but I do not know how to move beyond, if I´m going right.

I've been reading several tutorials and some information which mentions that besides DevC++ or CodeBlocks one also must download and install other installers MingW, wxSmith, wxWidget, GNU CC, Package Manager, and various other things (some documents refer to one, another document mentions a different, and so on). After downloading and installing Dev C++ or CodeBlocks, don’t they come complete?

One more: I only see tutorials that teach writing console applications. But I think since more than two decades ago, a programmer should be thinking about developing in Windows environment. Why is there so much reference (I believe all of them, the console apps info and those with something about Windows apps) to program for DOS (console)? Why are so few references to Windows applications (and not complete)?

Thanks.

You should search our wiki: http://wiki.codeblocks.org/index.php?title=Special:AllPages
You should find answers to all your questions.

As first use C::B with MinGW packaged or use C::B without MinGW and use a recent MinGW-based gcc-compiler from TDragon: http://tdm-gcc.tdragon.net/ .
If possible make sure you do not have two MinGW's on your hdd, or at least not in x:\MinGW, where x is any dirve on you system..

Console apps are often used to teach the basics of a programming language.

Without a basic knowledge of the language you use, you will never be able to write complex (gui-)apps.

EDIT:

By the way, I have removed your other post with the same content, which was (accidently?)  posted in an absolutely unrelated thread.

Well, “jens”. Thanks for your quickly answer.

My natural language is Spanish; sorry if my English sounds strange.

I’ll go there.

I have downloaded CodeBlocks 10.05 and I don’t know if MinGW is packaged or not. I only want to know how to develop a Windows application.

I don´t have MinGW in C:\ nor in “C:\Program Files” (I don´t have any other drive).

I know OOP (I consider it); I program in FoxPro and Visual FoxPro since twenty+ years ago.

Sorry, I am a novel participant.

A lot of info; the problem is that I cannot correspond what o where is the answer to any of my "questions".

FileName                     Installer File                                File Size

Code::Blocks                 codeblocks-10.05-setup.exe                22,732 Kb
MinGW                        codeblocks-10.05mingw-setup.exe     72,293 Kb
wxWidgets                     wxMSW-2.9.1-Setup.exe                  23.3   Mb
wxPack 2.8.8.04 [[**]]     wxPack_v2.8.8.04.exe                        315.9 Mb

I found dispersed info, not homogeneous, and I conclude that for a “good install” we need the installers indicated in the table, and I found a pdf (wxWidgetsCB.pdf), but this just moment I am tired for prof‘em; I have spend a week in tring tyo write an Win-app, but two days for discovered all the last info, and there is no yet a good scenario for I can make a Windows app in Dev C++ or in CodeBlocks.

I give up.

That God and Virgin Mary be with you forever.
