Hello,

I'm a translator and I wonder if a French translation of Code::Blocks was in progress.
If not, I would really be interessed in translating it to my native language.
Furthermore,do yon plan to add a translation system ?

I have a suggestion that all of you who want to do translation go to here

and download the file codeblocks.pot which I'll update regularly. Then you can  use the tool  PoEdit  (http://www.poedit.org/) to translate codeblocks.pot into your locale language called codeblocks.po,  and you can mail the translated file  codeblocks.po to me (zxpmyth#yahoo.com.cn). There is a file called zh_CN.po which is Chinese po file translated by myself. I'll compiled CB to support your language file. You can download international CB at http://bitworld.ys168.com.

At present, my compiled CB just support Chinerse and English.

In fact, I hope CB maneger can create a directory like po to store the language po files in the CVS respository.

Your in grade 12 french and your 16?  :shock: Well maybe it is different in Canada than the USA, because I'm in 10th grade and I'm in Spanish 1.......

Anyways it is nice to see people translating C::B into other languages. :)

I do really prefer English versions, even more in programming tools, but it's more friendly for some ppl to have it in the language they're so used to read and write.

I'm also from Colombia and I know a lot of ppl who always prefer Spanish versions if available, so it wouldn't be that bad after all.

I am more for english version of OSs and software :). This is very good especially when you work on projects with partners of other native languages.

Anyway, to translate C::B in different languages could make it accessible for users who do not speak english. This IMHO would be a positve thing :).

You say that because you master English.But people who don't are like disabled.They can't access at nearly 90% of the web.
It doesn't really matter for programming softwares since programmers usually speak English.
However,there will always help someone.So I guess it's not useless.

Localisation should be a matter of convenience, not of understanding.

If you are really unable to understand what is going on because something is in English, then sorry... but this is as if a blind man was attempting to drive a car.
You cannot possibly develop software or study computer science (or be active in any other scientific area) without sufficient skill in English. Seriously, a good Enlish course is the best investment that you can make. Most technical documentation and almost all scientific papers are in English (as is most of the Internet), and it is not a particularly complicated language, either. ;)

Personally, I don't like localised development tools. These confuse the hell out of me. Not only are many translations really pathetic (quite often, they make you shout "what the F@~* is this supposed to mean!!!"), but your brain has to switch between two languages all the time, which is tiring. Certainly, other people have different preferences, but like I said, this is a matter of convenience.

For me, localised versions are acceptable (and desirable) for example for a word processor or for a window manager, because you usually write your letters (or work, in general) in the same language. Also, most "everyday" menu items are not technical terms from CS, so the overall risk of incomprehensible translations such as "Laufwerk aushängen" or "Automatische Eingabeaufforderung für ActiveX-Steuerelemente" is not too great (I have to read this five times to understand what it's supposed to mean...).

But, you need to know, that the newbies and people starting to grown on programming, can't do if they don't have the localized version. Too much new stuff for them.

I remember years ago, using Visual Basic localized, and it helped a lot in that time (because I didn't knew english).

So please stop this discussion.

Please do say more. What exactly is making it more complicated?

I build CB with unicode mode, but my translation can't works any more like before. Maybe I don't find the right way. So I build CB with ansi mode. Now my translation works. However another problem produced. That's some phrases translated by me have been written into the file default.conf. When I first launch CB and close it, an exception will be raised. It's from sdk\configuremanager.cpp:487 and it says the node and the namespace are "an_dlg". That's because I have translated this phrase "Layout changed!"  in src\main.cpp:917. Then I choice not to translated it and launch CB again (Notice, some Chinese characters have been existed in the file default.conf). A alert window shows these:

TinyXML error:
Error reading end tag.

Good news
After I change the defult.conf's code page to utf-8, the second problem seems disappeared and the first one still be there.  Perhaps it is because CB is working with ansi mode, so the default.conf's code page is ansi.  However there produces another problem that all the Chinese characters in default.conf can't be shown correctly.

This has nothing to do with the fact that the config is stored in xml, but you have found an actual bug in AnnoyingDialog there. :)

The reason why this fails is that the dialog's caption is used
a) as the caption
b) as the title in the check list box where you can re-enable disabled dialogs
c) as a key in the config file (this works fine in English but is deadly with Chinese chars)

Although the problem is easily identified, a solution is not quite so easy. Well, the solution *is* easy, but it will break the exisiting configuration files for everybody...

Let me think about what to do best.

Why you say that? tinyXML supports Unicode UTF-8 encoded strings.

Not like that. It's improper use _U() and _C(). I have a patch for this at https://developer.berlios.de/patch/index.php?func=detailpatch&patch_id=827&group_id=5358.

Now the default.conf can have non-English characters which are certainly UNICODE. That is to say that the default.conf won't be affected on by the translation.

If you write something like

i.e. you translate the path, then this does not only make it impossible for people who are unable to speak Chinese to find an error in such a file, but it is also illegal.
It might even appear to work out of pure coincidence, but at some random point, it will fail, and we will not know why!
Please don't do such things, you're opening Pandora's box. Configuration keys should not be translated, and they should not contain special characters.

Storing non-ANSI characters as data is a completely different thing, this works fine since end of December, and you can certainly do it.

Yes, it's. So if the code is like this

My patchs have resolved some problems like this in CB's source codes.

I'am sure there is no problem with English characters with non-ANSI and ANSI mode. I have tested it that CB can't compeletly handles the non-English characters like Chinese characters as datas in default.conf with non-ANSI mode.  This patch also can resolve it.

I havn't tested it widely with non-English with ANSI mode.  So I have no idea of it.

Please, no more forums, several sticky topics would be better.  Just one for each langauge with the first post always edited to reflect the current status of the translation.

I gave my beginning of translation to 2 teams but it seems they didn't finish it.

I just want to check because I might finish the translation if nobody wants to. ( I was at 45 % and now I am getting more free time ).

First of all, I don't know what to do with a .pot file in the first place, so I cannot do it, and Yiannis is quite busy too.

A pot file is a message catalog template, from which the message catalog files (po) are generated. These, using the GNU gettext utilities are compiled into the mo files that are distributed along the program and that allow the localization.

It can be found here (http://www.gnu.org/software/gettext/gettext.html) information about GNU gettext and here (http://sourceforge.net/project/shownotes.php?release_id=325693&group_id=23617) information on how to include support for it in Windows binaries.

Hi,

my name is Edgar Franke from Karlsruhe, Germany, and I whould like to help
with the german translation and ask wether anybody else is doing the same.

I have already sent a message to Szabadember, who had offered to start a
german translation a few months ago.

I'm working here with handicapped people and some of them do not even know
a single word of english language (and really memorize all terms and commands
without knowing the english meaning), to them it whould be a big help to have
at least a german interface (even partially german whould help).

To me myself C++ and english language are not such a problem but 2000 strings
make me get dizzy in my head ...

I haven't read all of this thread, but it seems that a central translation server could be good for everybody.

Why not register CodeBlocks at https://launchpad.net/ (https://launchpad.net/) ?
This makes it easy to coordinate many translators, and to see how translation is progressing.

At http://wiki.codeblocks.org/index.php?title=Internationalization, I write a script called intl.bat. Use this script can take almost all of the translating strings out from the source files. From the begining, I have been using it. Of course, I'll update it if I have found it missed some strings.

If wanting CB to support your language, you must modify the file \codeblocks\src\src\appglobals.cpp. In it, you can search the word 'Chinese' to see the example.

using launchpad for translation might really be a good idea!

i (too) started to translate Code::Blocks into german and saw atleast two other people around here doing the same thing. not coordinating this means the same work is done too often...

using launchpad should really accelerate the translations and at the same time improve its quality (since non registered users can atleast suggest translations in launchpad).

I have compiled a french version. I corrected some mistakes but the pot file uploaded on launchpad is too old (Feb 2006) and some strings are missing.
The result is almost OK.

Translating them is easy, it's a plain text file. Organising them is another thing...
Currently we do not have support for internationalising the tips at all (though it should not be hard to implement).
If you make any translations of the tips file, you should save it to a file named tips.[lang].txt, with [lang] being the respective ISO 639-1 code (for example tips.fr.txt or tips.it.txt). Then we can simply choose the right file after querying the locale.

I'm trying to use heromyth's script (Found at http://wiki.codeblocks.org/index.php?title=Internationalization )

We have some lines such :

xgettext -C -n -k_ -j -o po\codeblocks.pot sdk\*.cpp sdk\*.h

but xgettext don't like   sdk\*.cpp   and say 'bad argument'. It seems that the * can't be used. :x
I'm looking for a version of xgettext which accept le * character.

Just wondering if the trunk maintained in Berlios is uploaded to the trunk at Launchpad once in a while.
Are the PO files in Launchpad currently based on significantly older source files?
Would it be better to download the latest POT files from the Berlios SVN to work on Translation?

I'm coming back and my tool for making POT file from a nightly build is nearly ready ...
The features of this program :
- it parse all sources files (cpp, h, xrp) in a directory and its sub-directories (No need to add manually the new files) and it create the POT file (unicode 8 encodation)
- it create a PO file for a new language
- it update a PO file with a new POT file or with and other PO file
and I'm adding an editor for the translation (like poedit)
It run under Windows and is written in Visual Basic. The license will be GNU GPL.

I have downloaded the spanish translation from Launchpad (.po and .mo files) and copied the .mo one to "/usr/share/locale/es/LC_MESSAGES" and even to "/usr/share/locale-langpack/es/LC_MESSAGES" and I have changed the name of the .mo file to "codeblocks.mo".

I am sure that the locale of my Ubuntu 8.04 x86_64 is "es" and I have activated the setting "Internationalization" and changet it to "Available Languages" in "Settings->Environment" inside Code::Blocks svn5105.

After that I can only see a few (three) messages changed and the rest continue in English. That changes do not seem to be made by the .mo files that I have copied there.

What I am doing wrong? Have I to modify the source code as it is related in another post?

Serching for the mistake, I have edited the .mo file with poEdit and it appears to be empty (0% translation). Then, I have opened the .po spanish file and it has 100% translated, so I have saved it to a "codeblocks.mo" file and with the same result: 0% translation in poEdit, Code::Blocks still in English after copying it to the above mentioned directories.

PD: I have started Galician translation at Launchpad, with the hope of seeing Code::Blocks in Galician when I know how to do it :?

poedit is made to open .po file which are text files, not .mo files which are binary files.
poedit transforms the .po text file in .mo binary file, but cannot interpret directly .mo files. (as far as I know!)
So your problem is elsewhere : a misspelled name, a lower or upper wrong case somewhere,.... a wrong path ...
As I'm under windows, and paths are differents, I can't help you more.

PS : are you sure that your path is with /es/. May be it's /es-ES/.

I am new to poEdit, but it seems that you are right, poEdit cannot interpret directly .mo files.
I started with the directories of the locales that are created at the moment, and there is no "/es-ES/" so I started trying with "/es/". But, as it seems not to work, I start trying "es_ES" (locales uses underscore), but I also try "es-ES" and some other similar locales that I remmember from my tests with other linux distributions (Debian, Opensuse, Fedora...). Then I have tried to copy spanish "codeblocks.mo" to all the locales just for try... and nothing works.

At the end, I tried the path that appers in this link http://wiki.codeblocks.org/index.php?title=Internationalization: /usr/X11R6/share/locale/<lang>/LC_MESSAGES/, but it seems that it is not the path that Ubuntu uses for internationalization.

In the wiki says that we have to edit a source file, but I have thinked that in this case it is not necessary, and I have installed Code::Blocks from .deb files build for us by Xaviou (http://forums.codeblocks.org/index.php/topic,8688.msg63302.html#msg63302).

PD: I will continue using C::B even if I cannot translate it, because it is (for me) the best IDE for C++ and wxWidgets at the moment (and I have tested all that I found).

I started with internationalization under my own project and, after no little pain, I get it to work and then: "Well, now that I know how to make wxWidgets internationalization work, let's have a look on Code::Blocks's source code about internationalization".

I downloaded the source through svn and opened it with C::B. I found the function "Initlocale()" where it seems that you start the locales. I see that you add a "path" to search catalog that I don't knew what was it so I added a simple "wxMessageBox(path, wxT("path"));" to see what was it. That wxMessageBox said (after "make install"):

/usr/share/codeblocks/locale

So putting the ".mo" file to the default folder "/usr/share/locale/<language>" do nothing for C::B. Then I put "_codeblocks-es.mo" to "/usr/share/codeblocks/locale" and it works!

I realised that the name of the ".mo" is not important, it works fine at least if you have only 1 ".mo" in that folder. I think that happens because I do not choose a particular language in "Settings->Environment...", but "Available languages". I also test that putting the ".mo" to a subfolder "es/LC_MESSAGES" or "es_ES/LC_MESSAGES" make it not to work.

The subfolder "locale" under "/usr/share/codeblocks" has to be created manually, it has not been created by the installation.

I think that the wiki have to be changed to reflect this for new users.

I reinstalled my SO updating it to Ubuntu 8.04.1 (64 bits).

Unfortunately, Code::Blocks localization does not work with this version. It seems that is not a problem of Code::Blocks itself, because it works well under the previous Ubuntu version, but I thought that I should tell you about that.

I wanted to update my French version of Code::Blocks, but I have several problems :
1) pot file on launchpad site is too old and does not reflect actual code status. I've heard an update will be done with 8.02 version, but apparently it has not been done.
2) pot files on svn trunk are also outdated.
3) I thought I could use extract.bat and extract.bash files from svn, but this last one use a -P option in grep. My grep does not support this (I'm on windows xp with mingw32 4.2.1 tools, msys...). I'm able to do this in 2 times, first on .cpp files only and secondly on .h files only (but adding grep filters to avoid files containing svn-base or html in their names).
4) Some items or labels are now placed in .xrc files (for example in project_menu_import.xrc). Apparently, xgettext does not recognize those files and I don't know if it's possible to use it to extract those item and put them in a .pot file. I tried, but without success.
5) finally, if I want to use my .mo file on an other computer running Linux, I have not found where to put it. I tried in /usr/share/codeblock/locale as proposed earlier by Ganbito. It worked with Redhat 5, but administrators have been obliged to downgrade in Redhat 4.7 for compatibilies reasons with other sofwares. If I put my codeblocks.mo as previously in that folder, it does not work, and others places suggested by Ganbito does not work too. So, where is supposed to be placed this file in linux ? Depends of the distribution, the version ? Not clear for me.

It's a litlle bit outdated, but extraction should work.
The batch-file can easily be adapted for linux.
To fetch all strings use also "-k_T" as option for "xgettext".
No changes to sourcecode have to be made.

Try "/usr/share/codeblocks/locale/[your_language]" (for german I use "/usr/share/codeblocks/locale/de_DE/codeblocks.mo") .

I know "Internationalization" on the Wiki but I thought I could not use it because I don't have wxrc. But, finally I have found it's sources in wxwidgets install folder. So may be ... But, the batch file needs a serious update.
Nevertheless, it could be better if launchpad site was updated. Like this, translation work can be shared.

For the location of codeblocks.mo under Redhat pro 4.7, I tried both solutions (with fr_FR in my case), but without success. The strange thing is that it worked with Redhat pro 5 !

My main machine is on Windows (Linux is at work, and I'm only a simple user, not an admin !!!)
Well, but on Windows XP (SP3), I have in my wxwidget install folder in utils\wxrc a source for wxrc and a .dsp file that I imported in C::B. Compilation is OK (but a few warnings). But at link time its says ld.exe cannot find -lwxbase28u_xml. So I suppose I need to build that library (or that dll), but I have not found how to do this. May be there is somewhere in the install folder a makefile or something else to build this wxrc.exe and all dll needed, but I have not found it.
I also tried to find on the web a wxrc.exe ready to use, but without success.

I have only wx2.8.9 available, so with 2.8.8 it might differ, but I don't think so.

If you have wxWidgets build yourself it's quite easy:


If you put "wxrc.exe" somewhere in your searchpath (e.g. MingW's bin directory) you should be able to use it from any folder.

I had a few problems because there was a sh.exe in my MinGW\bin folder, causing a conflict (or an other problem) in the makefile. But after renaming it in shxxx.exe, it's ok.
A simple test on a few .xrc files gave me strings with a quite good look, so I think I can go further now....

I have built an updated version of the .pot file, used to localize Code::Blocks. Here, chains have been extracted from SVN 5241.
To built it, I have made a compromise between intl.bat, found on the wiki (Internationalization, see earlier) and the file extract.bash found on Code::Block SVN (in i18n folder).
On my Windows PC, as in SVN file, extract.bash is launched by an extract.bat file (but it's easy to have a pure .bat file, without bash !).
To use this .bash file on Windows, you need :
- bash.exe (a tool from bash Msys, found with MinGW32 on sourceforge)
- grep.exe, xargs (tools from Msys Core, found with MinGW) : the version I have does not support -P option (as used in extract.bash from i18n folder from Code::Blocks SVN), so I have to use it twice, first to work on .cpp files, and then on .h files separately)
- find.exe (a tool in findutils, found with MinGW)
- xgettext, msgcat (tools from gettext, found with MinGW but also with poedit software) : I use only the --keyword=_ option, and not --keyword=_T because I think that only the first type of strings (those beginning only by _), need to be translated, not  the second one (but may be I'm wrong !).
- wxrc (you can build it from wxWidgets, using the makefile.gcc found in wxWidgets\utils\wxrc (thanks to jens ! for helping me on that point). Wxrc uses wxmsw28u_gcc_cb.dll (or by default wxmsw28u_gcc_custom.dll depending how you customize config.gcc in wxWidgets\build\msw).
- poedit to translate and build the .mo file.

I copied .bat and .bash file within my codeblocks_svn folder at the same level than i18n folder. I called this folder i18n_gd (but it can be an other name).
Executables bash, grep, find, xgettext, msgcat, some libraries (.dll) used by xgettext (but found in the same folder than poedit), wxrc, wxmsw28u_gcc_cb.dll (or wxmsw28u_gcc_custom.dll), must be accessed with your path environment variable (in my case, I have a C:\MinGW\bin folder, declared within path, where all theses executables are put).
In my i18n_gd folder, I execute extract.bat. At the end, I obtain an All_codeblocks.pot file with all extracted character chains that may be translated. Don't worry if you see a few (many  :() warnings. It's not very important.
I had also to delete a few lines, in the .pot file, containing "#, c-format" (without quotes) because, in poedit, some strings were not correctly interpreted when building .mo file.
wxrc extract also some chains with a beginning $$, thought it should certainly be $ (not double $).
Those 2 operations are done manually on the pot file in a text editor. This could certainly be done automatically, using some tool !!!

With poedit, you can then merge this .pot file with a previous codeblocks.po file (after saving the initial versions, one never knows !).

It works quite well, but I'm not totally satisfied with the result, because :
- I think that some character chains do not need to be translated, but are extracted anyway (especially some ones found in .xrc resource files) ;
- when merging in poedit, some strings have slightly changed from the previous .po file and poedit does not always make the good choice, but anyway consider them as approximate translations. The problem, is that those strings do not appear as translated in the .mo file, and it's frustrating because it's a sort of regression compared to the previous .mo file where they were correctly translated.
- some operations are still manual (changing $$ by $, and suppressing "#, c-format" lines).

Anyway, I think the result is quite good, but now there is a great work to verify, update and translate new strings.

If it was possible to merge this .pot file with the previous one on launchpad site, it could be easier to share the translation work.

In the different zip files, you'll find the .bat and .bash files, the file All_codeblocks.pot obtained, and a preversion of All_codeblocks.po file for French (there are still more than 900 strings to verify and/or translate !!!). :shock:

I have made new versions of the raw .pot file, and french .po and .mo files.

There is a total of 4795 character chains in the .pot file. In .po and .mo french files 318 are not translated and 5 are marked as approximately translated (As I don't use them currently :x, I'm not sure of the exact signification  :shock:). As you can see, we are very far from launchpad web site where there is "only" 2173 characters chains. Many work has been made by developpers. Thanks to them...To be honest, not all chains need to be translated, so the real number is less than 4795. :o

There are just some strings I wouldn't have translated the same way:
 -(in "Extensions") Gestion des plugins -> Gérer les extensions instead of "Gestion des plugins" (why use "Extension" and "plugins"? Just use "Extensions" :) ),
 -(in the plugin manager) "Si un plugin est mal écrit, il peut faire planter Code::Blocks when performing any operation on it..." -> "Si une extension est défectueuse, celle-ci peut faire planter Code::Blocks lors de son usage..."

 -(in "Paramètres") "Compilateur et débugger" -> "Compilateur et débogueur" (typo),
 -(in the dialog box accessed via "Paramètres->Edition de scripts" sripts instead of scripts (caption typo),
 -(in "Paramètres") the string "Edit startup script" have not been translated I propose "Editer le script de démarrage",
 -(in "Paramètres->Environnement->Paramètres généraux") "Ne permet l'éxecution..." -> "Ne permettre l'éxecution...",

Anyway, it's good to see Code::Blocks translated in french :)
I hope Code::Blocks will be translated in others languages as there are lot of people who doesn't like Code::Blocks (and go to MS VS) because it is not translated into their language...

Thanks four your remarks.
I have included some of them (and some others) in my new versions (see below). As you know, many translations were already present on launchpad. So, a few inconsistencies are quite normal between translators.
OK for "Extensions" instead of plugins. Many corrections have been made in the .po file.
For "Import project", it's not my fault ! It was a problem in C::B because the string was identified by a _T and not a single _ . So this string is not translatable. Nevertheless, this has been corrected by "killerbot" and is available on svn (but apparently not in the last compiled nightly for Windows). Similar problem for the sentence beginning in French and ending in English. Here too, correction made by "killerbot".
For "Edist startup script", I agree with you and I had translated like that, but I seems this strings is not translatable (so, it has been eliminated by poedit. May be a _T here too and not a single _, but I'm not sure !
For "Mode surlignage", I prefer to keep my own word:
1) because there are other "surligner" elsewhere
2) I think "coloration" may be confused with "Colorisation", a word which is good for syntax highlighting. Here, in the usage context, it's more something to show selected words to the user, by a specific colorization (text and background), that's true, but "surligner" seems better for me.

Updated version of the tool is here (http://pagesperso-orange.fr/thunderbird-noia2/i18n_GD.7z). Need also sed tool. You'll find also a specific tool for windows (no bash need, but always MinGW supplementary tools as find, xargs, xgettext, sed,...).

Now, C::B devers must do a step too... Please update .pot files on lunchpad and fix what need it! Would be much more easy for everybody :) .
I've downloaded PoEdit, I understand now why translating an app' is so hard... I will try to bring my contribution to the translation effort.

ps:  Why not create (a) translators team(s) by the way?

Hi all.

I've tested this french translation, and it works fine : thanks !

There are some improvements to make to the C::B source to make it perfect  (I don't know if it is the right place to report this) :

First, the "New class wizard" doesn't works properly : when adding a new class witch inherits from another, the "scope" keyword (public, protected or private) is translated (but of course it shouldn't). This appends only for the scope keyword, not inside the class declaration.
For example, creating a class B inherited from a class A should be :

But with the french translation, the code generated is :

virtual ~B();

Then, I think that the "Start here" page should also be translated. And for now, the only way to do this is editing the corresponding html file, and replacing the following texts :
And even when doing this, it is not fully translated : the "Recent projects" and "Recent files" titles stay in english.

Neverless, great work, gd_on, for the french translation ;)

You are certainly right. These setting must not be translated here.

In the code, I think its in src/plugins/contrib/wxSmith/wxwidgets/wxsnewwindowdlg.cpp at lines 210, 212 or 214, they are initialized with the macro _, which means they can be translated, which is normal if it's used only to identify a button or something else to be displayed in the graphic user interface. Obviously, it's also used to generate code, and of course, it must not be translated. The author of this plugin should probably use here the macro _T and not _.
In the next French version, I will correct this (in fact do a workaround), simply by duplicating the English words in the French translation.

This is not it. This code is in no way releated to the class wizard. Nevertheless - the line of code you are referring to is here:

Because the .xrc have been scanned  with wxrc to find textes to translate and they got translated.

True, but I prefer to duplicate English words to be sure that these words have been intentionally put here (and intentionally not translated), and it's not something forgotten or a sentence I don't totally understand.

I don't understand the exact problem. In /src/main the author make a difference between "state=" and "state=%d", using the macro _T for the first case and the macro _ for the second one. So I suppose he wants the second one to be translatable !

Also, it's true that when using wxrc to scan for translatable characters chains in xrc files, I find many many strings. A lot of them have to be translated, but a few ones don't need to. More, it could be an error to do so, as shown by this reported problem. But, how can I do ? Not obvious  :( :(

A lot of things in this patch concern the ThreadSearch Plugin. It seems that the interface code whas been auto-generated by wxGlade, it's why it contains a lot of "wxT" instead of "_". I'm afraid that next update of this plugin will replace the corrected macros by the _T one.

I'll see  :)
I will apply a patch to spare place for small screen.
But my approach is to generate files in a temporary directory and then merge the graphical stuff so my code is not modified. That's why I think it should work, unless you propose a patch for this tool  :wink:

hi,
i did download a translation file for german
i did install it to the locale folder and selected it in C::B
it did work c::b was in german

but somehow my custom syntax highlight settings were broken after this :(
i had a black background and white forderground in bat and c files definied in syntax high lighter
but after all was german the black background was gone!
it did still show the same settings in the options but not in the editor
i thoght something with the settings is broken so i did try to set the black background again ( i did set to a other color and then set again to black)
but still the background was white
so i did disable the localisation in the enviroment settings and like magic the background was black again
so somehow when i use german translation i cant set or use a black background in the editor
but if i disable localisation it works like a charm

so i guess something with the german translation is not well!
they say its 100% translated and it looks also so... but it is eating my black background in the editor somehow :(

so now i use again in english
i guess as long i like black background i cant use a german translation :(
and because of that i dont beleave that it is 100% ready for use :(

maybe someone here can use this feedback(?)
and maybe fix this (how ever) :D

edit:
i did download the mo and te other file and in the enviroment settings i only see german ... i dont know which file i use ... i guess its the mo file

The only thing I can imagine is that a keyword is being translated which originates in editorcolourset.cpp or alike. This can happen. Can you post the (readable) translation (ZIPPED) here so I can have a look for the translation of said (and probably other relevant) files)?

i did download the files for german translation which i add to this ost as zip

i did install the translation file to C:\Program Files\CodeBlocks\share\CodeBlocks\locale\de_DE

c:b was translated to german

i did a syntax highlight setting also added to next posting...

in c.b english all is ok

in c.b translated german the background of syntax is white instead of black
some parts of the background were black but the main background was white but in the configuration..
settings>editor>syntax highlight all colors were as i whish them but in the editor and in the preview they were not as i whish them ... but the color choosers was telling me that background is black ... but the display was looking white

i hope this will help ... if i can provide more information just tell me....
if i should test something just tell me exactly what to do...

Hi Dagobert

You need to download the ".mo" file(s).
Go to your Code::Blocks install dir, in the "share\CodeBlocks" sub folder.
Create a folder named "locale" if it does not exists.
In this folder, create another one named "fr_FR", and put the ".mo" file(s) in it.

So, your ".mo" file(s) should be in "Code::Blocks install dir\share\CodeBlocks\locale\fr_Fr".

Then, launch Code::Blocks, go in the "Settings", "Environment" menu.
In the appearing box, select "View" in the left list, check the "Internationalization" check-box, and select "French" in the list.

Now, restart Code::Blocks, and it should be translated in French.

Have set Settings \ Environment \ View \
check the box internationalization and chose Russian, restart the program.
But the language was English ...

A few updates to the .pot file extracted from svn 6564 are here (http://thunderbird-noia2.pagesperso-orange.fr/All_codeblocks_6564.7z).
Translation in French, also updated from svn 6564 in the .po and .mo file is here (http://thunderbird-noia2.pagesperso-orange.fr/All_codeblocks_fr_6564.7z). It contains 5726 character chains, but there are still 53 which are not translated : I don't know exactly how to translate them (even if I understand what they globally mean  :?) . So, if somebody has some suggestions don't hesitate to mail them. :)

Important : You should update the French translation to avoid problems (crash or malfunctioning) with EditorTweaks plugin.  French users but also translators in other languages should have a look at discussions starting here (http://forums.codeblocks.org/index.php/topic,13169.msg88698.html#msg88698) and here (http://forums.codeblocks.org/index.php/topic,13216.msg88823.html#msg88823)

The extracting tool is here (http://thunderbird-noia2.pagesperso-orange.fr/i18n_GD.7z). It is different than the one provided in I18n svn sub folder : it produces a monolithic file for all chains, but it also analyses .xrc files which contains many chains to be translated. If you open C::B for the 1srt time, they are in English and stay in English even if you switch to another language (French for example).
More, if you have switched to French (for example), close C::B, delete the file default.conf, and reopen C::B, they appear that time, as all other items, in French. Nevertheless, if you switch back to English, those 3 items stay in French.
I think it's because those strings are coded inside default.conf and not updated when switching the language.

New : I have translated in French the Code::Blocks manual available in English and German on C::B site. You'll find a version of the pdf file here (http://thunderbird-noia2.pagesperso-orange.fr/manuel_codeblocks_fr.pdf). It's a compromise between version 1.0 and 1.1 (I have kept the last paragraph of version 1.0 about C:B building/installation). This work has been submitted to reviewers, but is not still approved. So, it may still change.

Is it updated?

Because, for example, I see in .po file the string "Open", while in codeblocks I see the string "Open...".
I think the original .po file lacks some recent string:
what's the correct way to add these to the translation?

Should I generate again full .po from sources?

I'm a bit confusing...

As said previously, files on launchpad are largely outdated. Obviously, it's not easy to update it. There are also .pot files distributed with svn, but I think that too many strings are missing because some files are not analyzed.
A solution :
download my .pot file (see previous post). It contains all the strings in English. Not too old.
Download and install poedit.
Open your outdated .po file with poedit.
Import/update my .pot file to obtain an updated .po file (3rd menu, 2nd item).
Now you "just" :? have to translate missing strings and/or verify strings marked as "fuzzy". That's a long work, but you have time... :? And you can work with partially translated files.
Save your work and generate a .mo file (first menu, 5th item or second icon button).
An other solution : contact with a PM xaviou. He is working on a "Launchpad like" solution, but updated. He certainly can add an Italian entry, but you'll have to provide translations, built as suggested above with poedit.

What I don't get is: why is it so complicate to change localization in C::B?? Having to read through all these posting, trying to find links, getting an account on launchpad...

I get that the translation itself is a lot of work, and that it is not easy to get EVERYTHING translated... but could there not be at least an import function in C::B? Or a link from within the program to the launchpad sources for the languages? Or at least an instruction in the help-files? In the documentation?

right now it looks like you have to be a geek to get C::B lokalized... :-(

If it is such a problem you could write a wiki page here: http://wiki.codeblocks.org/index.php?title=Main_Page then provide a patch, so a link is added to C::B...
C::B is a community effort and people work on what is interesting to them or bothers them.
So it seems the translation is one of the last items on TODOs :)

p.s. Most devs prefer the IDE/dev tools to be in English. I'll feel very strange if I use a native language translation of C::B or any other IDE. If will be quite unintuitive.
      For normal programs it is OK to be translated, but the specialized software should be English only (also it makes it easier to find solutions in our favorite search engine).

@oBFusCATed: I understand that translations are not top prio, and not everyone likes to do them. I also understand you prefer english for a compiler IDE... That said, since there IS a translation project AND the Translations seems to be done in some languages (e.g. German), it would be great to have an easy way to add it. It simply gives more people access, making it more popular. Which in turn makes more people likely to donate time/money to the project.

It's ok when the software doesn't come with all latest transaltions.

I am looking at the nice-to-have way: a link to the howto in the Program's description, and maybe a link where to download latest transaltion versions. It seems so near to reach and so much hard work has already been done.

Anyway... great project, great job!

I choose the French translation for svn 7636. So I bring my contribution to the unfinished parts.
This is a file with your translation difference (cb_po_fr.zip). I'm not much on translations, so it is only a proposal.
I am ready to submit my proposals (French) to each new release.

On the other hand, I submitted to 'Jens' proposal concerning the translation of scripts (plugin or not).

Thanks for your propositions.
I'm not sure they are all correct, but it looks quite good.
For "name mangeling" you propose "noms abimés" : this is probably the only case where I don't think it is good.
For me "name mangeling" is the fact that when a subroutine name in Fortran for example is called from C (or C calls a routine written in Fortran), you have to add an underscore to the name of the routine (I don't remember if it's at the beginning or the end of the name). Like that, your subroutine may be called from C and fortran, but not with exactly the same name, and you can mix languages in your code. So, translate this by "abimés", ... ?
But I can't find a good translation for that.

I do not know Fortran. But I know the difficulty of translating in unknown context.
Perhaps  "préfixé", "posfixé", 'modifié", "agencé" ...

my name is Wagner de Queiroz and I talk from Brazil, I finish today at lanchpad website the translation of the Code::Blocks to Brazillian Portuguese and put some translations to Portuguese too, (but I have no hope if the portuguese version are ok, but I try).

So, I'm happy to finish the Brazillian translation, Its a little complicated to put the Code::Blocks at Brazillian Portuguese at Ubuntu 12.04 but reading post by jens Now I'm happy again.

To put the .mo file at code::Blocks, I create some folders and put my .mo file at:
 /usr/share/codeblocks/locale/pt_BR

The folder locale and pt_BR doesn't exist and you have be the root user to play there.
I put the translation .mo file (downloaded from launchpad website) here:

 /usr/share/codeblocks/locale/pt_BR/_codeblocks-pt_BR.mo

and open the Code::Blocks, but A lot of messages is not translated, but at launchpad website I translated all string, strange...

At Launchpad we have 2137 lines of translations. Anyone have more lines to put at launchpad website?

Not so strange. Strings on Launchpad are definitely completely outdated. There is at present time approximately 8000 strings to translate (oups !), and many strings in launchpad are not exactly as they appear in C::B, so they are not translated ! Have a look two post above, you'll find a more recent .pot translation file.

The extracted version of wxWidgets-2.8.x or 2.9.x-wxWidgets ?
Because the version 2.8.x does not generate the position of the extracted strings.

Yes, it's 8572, sorry for the mistyping ... :-[ Corrected in the original post  ;)
I still use wxWidgets 2.8.12 and wxrc found in the utils folder.
Now, I use TDM gcc 4.7.1, so it has been necessary to re-compile and build wxWidgets and wxrc. But, that's all.
I have not tried my tools with wxWidget 2.9.x, sorry.

May be ... or not.
It depends where are those strings and if they are marked (in a .cpp, .h, ...file) as translatable (with _(...)) or not translatable (with _T(...)).
If they are in a .xrc file they also can be found, normally.
An other problem, is ... I can't locate them in the sources. They are somewhere, sure, but in which file ? I have not found them  :(

These strings are part of the wxWidgets wxTipDialog in tipdlg.cpp and can not be translated in C::B.
They should automatically be used localized, if you have installed the i18n package of wxWidgets.

I had also just found them in wxwidgets\locale\fr.po (in my case).
If with poedit, I create a fr.mo and put it in the same directory where is All_codeblocks.mo, it works. (I'm on Windows)

I'm not totally sure of this, but with last C::B version, the name of some compilers are inside new compiler_xxx.xml files located in ...\src\plugins\compilergcc\resources\ in your svn folder.
1) my extracting tool does not analyze those files, so cannot find the chains which are located there, :(
2) even if I extracted those strings, I'm not sure that C::B can use them : almost all the compiler names appear in English on my own list, even those which are not identified in .xml files but are in standard C files, except 3 or 4, whose description string is in French ! Why only those ones  ??? May be there is a subtle difference that I don't see !

Strange, because strings that are inside default.conf are not affected by translation files, except the first time, when default.conf is generated ! And this is (was ?) a problem for translations.

This is exactly what must have happened.
I installed 12.11 there is little time and with your translation file and as  'All_codeblocks_fr_8644_12.11.7z'  included this oversight,  the file 'default.conf' was retained.
I can use the same translation file in a compilation of r8818, and the use of AVR I discovered the problem.

As far as I know, there are no bengali translations available, even on Launchpad : look at https://translations.launchpad.net/codeblocks/+translations
But as I told many times in this forum, launchpad version is really too old.
Look a few post before, download a recent .pot file, use poedit to translate the file, and use the .mo file generated. For a Windows install, copy this file in Codeblocks\share\CodeBlocks\locale\xxxx where xxxx is specific to your country. For French, xxxx is fr_FR. Normally, in the CodeBlocks settings, your language should appear if the .mo file is at the right place.

Small problem to extract strings to be translated in C::B sources :
in ...\CodeBlocks_src\src\plugins\codecompletion\testing\ there is a file named cc_type_with attributes.cpp
The problem I have is that there is a space character in its name (between "with" and "attributes") and this space is considered as a separator for many unix like utilities, so the name is truncated and it makes an error in my string extraction tool. :-[
I have slighly modified my string extraction tool to eliminate this file in the search process, but it could be nice  ;) if this space character could be replaced by a _ as in many other file names.

I have opened a new launchpad page to share C::B translations : https://launchpad.net/codeblocks-gd (https://launchpad.net/codeblocks-gd).
The specific translation page is https://translations.launchpad.net/codeblocks-gd (https://translations.launchpad.net/codeblocks-gd) : choose "View All languages", at the bottom, right.
I have imported in that page the translations found on the old web page for the most used languages (currently 14 languages). On request, I can add new languages (but translators will have a little bit more work !). Sorry for that, but original translators names have been lost in many cases  :-[.

Of course, French language has the most translated strings. It has been updated for svn 11764 version and contain translation work done until now.
For Russian language, I have also found a quite recent page but not up to date. Many translations need to be approved, but I'm not the right guy to do that ! (I learned Russian language at school, but this was a long time ago ;).
The launchpad page is opened as "structured". So you should be able to propose new translations. In some cases, they should be approved by somebody before publication.
It's certainly possible to add approbators but I still does not know how to do.

I'll try to maintain the "template" when new English strings will be available.
You (translators) should be able to participate. You need to have a launchpad (Ubuntu) account.
Other users can request a download for the .po ou .mo file. It's this last one (.mo file), the binary form, that you can use for using C::B in your own language : simply put it in your "codeblocks installation directory"/share/CodeBlocks/locale/"language string" (for me, on Windows, it's C:\Program Files\CodeBlocks_wx312_64\share\CodeBlocks\locale\fr_FR). Then in the menu Settings/Environment.../View you should be able to choose the language.

It's also certainly possible to add somebody to update the "template". If there is a volonteer ...  ;D (who knows how to add his name at the right place 8)).

A few precisions for using translated menu strings in C::B.

For users of translations only :
Download the .mo format file in the requested language. The launchpad name may be something like : de_LC_MESSAGES_All_codeblocks.mo (here for german).
You should put this file inside your codeblocks installation directory.
On Windows, it's something like : C:\Program Files (x86)\CodeBlocks\share\CodeBlocks\locale\xxxx (for 32 bits) or C:\Program Files\CodeBlocks\share\CodeBlocks\locale\xxxx for 64 bits.
Path under Linux is quite similar.
xxxx has to be adapted to your language. It's :
de_DE for German,
es_ES for spanish,
fr_FR for french,
it_IT  for italian,
lt_LT  for lithuanian,
nl_NL for dutch,
pl_PL for polish,
pt_BR for portuguese brasilian,
pt_PT for portuguese,
ru_RU for russian,
si        for sinhalese,
zh_CN for chinese simplified,
zh_TW for chinese traditional.

Create the sub-directories if needed. And place your downloaded .mo file here. You can leave the filename as it is or only keep the first letters (as you want), but keep the extension .mo.

Then start CodeBlocks. In setting/Environment/View you should be able to check the language box (internationalization) and choose your language. If not, you have probably forgotten something or made an error.
Restart C::B to activate the new language.

If you want to switch back to english, simply uncheck the language box.

For translators :
you can directly work in launchpad.
Problem : the interface is not really friendly.
You can also download the .po file, work on it with poedit for example (free version is OK). You can test your translations locally by compiling (creating a .mo file) and installing the .mo file in the right sub-directory of CodeBlocks.
When you have made sufficient progress (it's your decision), you can upload you .po file in launchpad. It may be necessary to approve your work or mark it as to be reviewed.
Don't be afraid : it's quite a long work. In the old site there was 2173 string to translate. Now it's more than 9300 ! But the job can be shared, Launchpad is done for that !
Tip : Begin with menus that you use often : you'll see the progress.

Hello,
I just loaded the file 'All_codeblocks_All_codeblocks-fr.po' to test it on 'CB-12467-wx315'.
Under Win7 with "Poedit-3.0.1', I got ''All_codeblocks_All_codeblocks-fr.mo' that I renamed 'codeblocks-fr.po', then dropped in "$(APP_PATH)\share\CodeBlocks\locale\fr_FR"

At the start of "cb-12647"
  - without this file: no problem
  - with this file and choice 'French' in Settings : an argument window appears twice (see attachment)

This message is provided in "wx-3.1.5\src\common\menucmn.cpp" during the second "wxCHECK_MSG"

Are you sure ? The extension should stay .mo (a compiled form), not .po (a text form).

More, on launchpad (https://translations.launchpad.net/codeblocks-gd) you can download a .po file, but you can also download a .mo file which should be directly usable in Code::Blocks

OK. So it's an other problem.
I tried different things as :
everything work as expected.

I also tried to rename a .mo file in .po, just to see what happens. C::B logically appears in English : no assert message.

So, I can't reproduce your behaviour.

One idea : Are you sure you use a wxWidgets version compiled with the same compiler version as your Code::Blocks build ?

There is also an other thing which look strange for me :
at line 405 in menucmn.cpp (located in C:\wxWidgets-3.1.5\src\common for me), I have :

which does not correspond exactly to your indicated code lines. For me it's inside wxMenuBase::DoInsert (not in wxMenuBase::Insert)
Assert lines are 403 or 406. So, may be we have not exactly the same wxWidgets 3.1.5 version !)

Note : it's in wxWidgets 3.1.6 (trunk version, beta) that I have a wxcheck at line 405, inside wxMenuBase::Insert ! But, I still don't use it in C::B.

I had downloaded 'wx-315' sources on the 'WXWidgets' website and had compiled using 'gcc-810' without problem until this test.

I will check everything today...

In doubt I recompiled 'wx-315' and the size of the result was different from the old one, even though I used the same source and the same compiler and the same build script ??
With this recompiled version, no more problem with your translation files compiled by 'Poedit'.

A new updated version of my translatable string extracting tool can be found here (http://pagesperso-orange.fr/thunderbird-noia2/i18n_GD.7z).
It is able to scan new translatable strings in plugin scripts.
The english template on Launchpad has also been updated (https://launchpad.net/codeblocks-gd) [appoved but not still imported in the data base]
However, for translators, many of the new strings are only partial sentences. As the word order in the recomposed full sentences may depend on the language, it is advisable not to translate them and to wait for a future rework on them.

Main plugin's manifest.xml contents appear in the POT, but not those from the contrib folder.

For example, the debuggergdb plugin's contents are in the POT, but those in regex_testbed from contrib are not.

With [r13017] you can see the difference, for example, in the Help -> Plugins menu.

In you bash file, the line

because there are a few manifest in Smartindent as manifest_cpp.xml, manifest_fortran.xml,... which are missed with only manifest.xml

Decoding an xml file is not so simple than a cpp or a .h file. I first extract lines containing some specific strings as description, author, ... to create a pseudo cpp file, here src_xml3.cpp. It needs some adjustments : that the reason of all the intermediate sed modifications. Then this pseudo cpp is concatenated and analyzed. Doing like that, the real origin of the string is lost, but normally it should be there. find itself do a recursive analysis.
Nevertheless, it's possible that I have missed something, a specific field, maybe the line containing "title" ?
In the regex_testbed manifest, the description "A testbed for regular expressions." is in the .pot file, and is translated in my po file. This proves that find does the recursive job...

Author usually does not need translation, unless it is something like "The wxWidgets team". I will remove accents from wxSmithAUI.
Author's mail and web will not need translation.

This is a nightmare, but little can be done now. Another problem are wxSmith-generated strings, they always use _() even for numbers.

If you need to extract translatable string with gettext from xml files, you can use its ITS support to do so https://www.gnu.org/software/gettext/manual/html_node/Preparing-ITS-Rules.html (https://www.gnu.org/software/gettext/manual/html_node/Preparing-ITS-Rules.html). This might be easier than parsing the XML yourself.

Launchpad is alive...
New strings introduced. Extracting tool slightly updated (see previous post, same link).

Note 1: it's possible to download a raw .po file (without any translations). You need to be connected to a launchpad account (an Ubuntu one)
Go to Translations, click on codeblocks-gd series under All translatable series, then (eventually on Full list of templates, if you have it) and/or on Download.
In the 1rst case, you can choose which file you want, template alone, .po files... via a checkboxes dialog;
In the second case, you'll have a full download (template + all translations).
Then request a download and wait a mail when your generated file is ready.

Note 2: If you upload an updated translation file, you can follow the import queue. Eventually click on the left on the small ! in a yellow cercle beside the name of your translation, verify that boxes contain correct values (language and template), then approve it. Your file will change it's status form "Need review" to "Approved". Of course, I can do this for you...

I am looking to translate tags extracted by 'wxrc' in the 'codestat::main_dialog.xrc' plugin:
There are four named fields :

What does it mean "XXXX% " ?

POedit is very picky when it finds a % in a string. It thinks the % starts a modifier (like %s) and then complains it is not in the translated string. The same happens with a string containing "%Untitled%s", the message is "Modifier %Untitlled not found in the translation".

You can ignore the message.

In cbeditor.cpp, lines 932 and 934, you have strings "%sUntitled%d" and "Untitled%d". Only the first one is a (small !) problem in poedit.
It's possible to add a spaces like "%s Untitled %d" and "Untitled %d". Like that, poedit is "happy" !
But, this is really a detail!
