diagnostics at bottom of build disappeared

I've been working on my program for a couple of months (approx 500 lines) when the error diagnostics at the bottom of a build disappeared (?).  I reinstalled the disk (C++ for Dummies, 6e) in a different location, changed the compiler and debugger settings, but can't get them to show.  Everything else appears to work ok.
Suggestions, please.
