Title: RC3 release date moved back a few days
Post by: mandrav on May 29, 2006, 02:02:46 pm
Just what the title says. The release has been postponed for the 4th or 11th of June (coming Sunday or the next).

The reasons for this don't have to do with the development state of Code::Blocks, but rather with some (small) real-life problems of two team members (me and Thomas).

Thanks for understanding :).

Yiannis.

I was wondering if the next release would still be coming up this soon!  Just judging by the roadmap as of late.

I will wait very patiently, and I will make sure I get the time within the next week to update my code because I may be without internet access for the whole month... Anyways, I hope you get those problems resolved! 8)

Just out of curiosity - I've been trying to keep an eye on the SVN logs, and I haven't seen anything related to several of the features the Roadmap predicts for RC3, most notably the XML-based compiler framework and the property-based build system.  Is RC3 going to contain all that, or is it being pushed off for a future version?
(Not trying to push, of course; just wondering.)

The specific feature you 're mentioning, will not make it (as well as a couple of others). We tried our best but we didn't want to postpone the next release any longer. Even as it is, there are people that think C::B development has died   (don't ask me why :)).
These features are being actively worked on but they haven't reached a "stable" state yet, so they 're left for v1.5. The roadmap will be updated accordingly when it's clear what made it and what didn't.

Mainly on the basis that RC2 dates so far back, which is all most visitors see on the main page before clicking away. Most will not drill down into the forum to keep posted on all the active development that is happening.

RC3 will do a lot of good for CB's reputation when it makes it to the front page. For the rest of us who visit here regularly, the nightlies already offer all (or most of) the goodies that will be in RC3 so it will have less impact. The 1.0 release however will be a real milestone since most bugs will have been eradicated and so development of even more features can then be considered.

I'm so glad!

Btw, do you think v1.0 Final will be ready around july or september? I know a couple of projects whose members will be glad to use C::B.

Oh - hi all  long time, no see. I was just passing around and thought of giving you a visit.

:) can you compile it with GDC support (D language GCC and GDB support) :) it shouldn't make much difference to a man who knows how to compile GCC & GDB ;) Something I wansn't able to do myself.

Anyway packaging CB with the MinGW will help much the total noobz who don't know anything about C but are oblidged to study it in school and I think there is no better tool than CB to start learning C.

We're not compiling MinGW. That's what the MinGW team is doing ;)
Besides, if all goes well, MinGW will not be bundled with Code::Blocks. It will not need to be.

I don´t need it, too, but i think it would ease up the installation process a lot for new programmers. And besides that it´s nice to have a package which contains everything, so you can start immediately. it looks better than to say "you need library x, package y, system z etc"

I agree with this statement

One of our faculty members has created an installer with all the necessary components for our introductory students at the college.

I am sure that he will update the  package as codeblocks is updated.

His link is here: http://www.sci.brooklyn.cuny.edu/~goetz/codeblocks/

That is an excellent tutorial, both for general usage and debugging.
Thanks

BCCISProf you can put few students to the CB project. There are always students who wants  to do something useful .

I think the CB project should continue to offer with MinGW and without, it lowers the entry for new programmers. Who are struggling enough with the language and who don't need to be worrying about configuring build options. (granted the auto-detect is very nice)

Hello,
I've created an installer with NSIS (http://nsis.sourceforge.net/Main_Page) and HM NIS EDIT (http://hmne.sourceforge.net/). It includes the nightly CB_20061029_rev3157_win32 and the following MinGW (http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/mingw/?sort_by=date&sort=desc) packages:
It will install MinGW in C:\MinGW and allows you to choose where to install Code::Blocks. It also creates shortcuts to Code::Blocks and the Code::Blocks homepage.

I'm looking into it. I need to identify something that can be done by undergraduates, with limited experience, that is useful.

Perhaps, online documentation, or a translation into a language that you don't yet support.....

Can people open other topics for the discussions? it is very confusing to see the messages in this topic that has nothing to do with the RC3 release. it was only an announcement...

Any Chance the tutorial can be made into a Wiki? This would make it more accessible and updateable.
