I noticed that Code::Blocks' icons looked a little old (especially noticeable on Vista and 7), so I made some new icons (http://ngcoding.tech.officelive.com/Documents/New_Icons.7z) (compressed with 7zip (http://www.7-zip.org/)).
(Edit:Here (http://ngcoding.tech.officelive.com/Documents/Png_Icons.7z) they are as png images.)
(Edit2:XP compatible (http://ngcoding.tech.officelive.com/Documents/Set_B_Fixed.7z) versions of set B icons.)
Please test them out and leave a comment/suggestion about the several variations (there are a couple extra).
I can also try to create other icons (you never know what Code::Blocks might gain support for :)) and convert these to other formats (for systems other than Windows) if someone gives me a few details on what is required.
(Edit3:Here are all the splashes (https://skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Public/splashes.7z?cid=5183ac017415bf92&sc=documents) and graphics (https://skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Public/graphics.7z?cid=5183ac017415bf92&sc=documents) I have posted - these are on my SkyDrive, so they should not go offline.)

C::B uses only pngs for the icons, because it is cross platform (almost in the true meaning of the word, not the M$ meaning:) ).

Additionally, on Windows the executable is linked against the ICOn resources coming from here:
[C::B_SVN]\src\resources\resources.rc
-
OK, thanks. I had used the Windows resources for an idea of what was used (and for compiling in these new icons, which worked fine).
Here are the icons in png (http://ngcoding.tech.officelive.com/Documents/Png_Icons.7z) format.

Very beautiful!
-
Wonderful Job.
by the way, I think the image(codeblocks' official splash image)
is not quite good. it has a lot of empty space in the bottom half.
-
I appreciate the complements, thanks.
I have been working on an alternate splash as well, but it still needs some tweaking. However, I could share what it currently looks like.
Probably I will move the text down a bit.
-
I finished with the alternate splash.
It looks very cool on my machine :). (I changed the x and y offsets in [C::B_SVN]\src\splashscreen.cpp to 351 and 214 if anyone was wondering.)
-
I finished with the alternate splash.
It looks very nice, indeed. The only thing I would like to have different is that the actual C::B quadrant is is the foreground, although it would look surrealistic. The reason is, that especially the violet and green colored cubes look a bit weired as the color is bumpy... just my 2 cents...

Nice design, this one was much better than the previous one. both the word has the perspective view.
I would like the C::B quadrant be in front the panel, also, what does the bubble used for?
-
what does the bubble used for?
For the version number.
We can use it as a trunk new logo?
New release -> new logo. ;-)
-
It's very beautiful and I like 3D logo.
-
I don't like it, it is pretty 90-ish...
-
I don't like it either... too "fancy", I'd say, in lack of a better word to describe my fellings...
-
Thanks everyone for your input.
the violet and green colored cubes look a bit weired as the color is bumpy...
Yes the colors do look a bit off (it was surprisingly difficult to get the correct colors); I think I have fixed the green (see below), and I will see if I can do anything about the violet. (Is what you are seeing as bumpy the inner reflections and transparency?)
what does the bubble used for?
For the version number.
Yes; I also made a version without it here (http://ngcoding.tech.officelive.com/Documents/CBSplash.7z) (it also includes my blender project file and the original 1920 by 1200 renders - who knows, maybe someone wants a C::B wallpaper).
We can use it as a trunk new logo?
New release -> new logo. ;-)
I would love it if this splash became official. (Does this mean a new release is in the works by any chance?)
I would like the C::B quadrant be in front the panel
I am not sure exactly what you are suggesting, could you elaborate?
-
I would like the C::B quadrant be in front the panel
I am not sure exactly what you are suggesting, could you elaborate?
I mean that the C::B quadrant would be put parallel to the front plane which contains the text. Your current design was putting the quadrant in the side plane.
-
(Is what you are seeing as bumpy the inner reflections and transparency?)
Yes, that's what I meant. The C::B symbol should be more solid-coloured with less reflections. This is the main icon, basically and should ideally consist just of the 4 C::B colours... shadows not counting. But here, a lot more other colours come in due to the reflections. For example the black content (the mirrored webpage address for example) should not be there IMHO. So maybe it's just as simple as turning the transparency off for this part.
Besides: It's really nice! :D And please keep the bubble for the version number. This is required (also, for some guidelines, see here: http://forums.codeblocks.org/index.php/topic,12156.msg82577.html#msg82577).

I don't like it either... too "fancy"
Does this style (less "in-your-face" 3D) better suit you?
Personally, I prefer the other style, but an altered version (http://ngcoding.tech.officelive.com/Images/wallpaper.png) of this has become my new desktop background.
I mean that the C::B quadrant would be put parallel to the front plane which contains the text.
Like this?
It will still need some work (move the bubble up; possibly replace the falling cubes on the side panel with something like a few lines of code).
The C::B symbol should be more solid-coloured with less reflections.
OK, transparency and reflectivity reduced.

Of the icons I posted at the beginning, I have realized that I accidental used an ico file format which is incompatible with XP. Here (http://ngcoding.tech.officelive.com/Documents/Set_B_Fixed.7z) is an XP compatible version I converted (set B only).
-
I have to agree this logo looks totally 90'ish...
It's like... First first 3D attempts under Windows 95...
And what does this concept mean? It looks like a big gravestone.
And it's so shiny... Shiny stuff is so outdated...
And the bubble? Oddly rotated and sticking out.
And the colors? Like a kids toy.
Splash screen used till today has really cool logo, I'd use that logo everywhere (maybe rotated somehow to better fit in an icon).
I just don't like italic font there too much and agree it needs to be rearanged so there's not that empty space anymore.
Pastel colors & paint-like 3D are so modern, rich colors & fancy shiny 3D look really childish...
Don't take me wrong, I'm just explaining my opinion...
Just have a closer look and compare these two...
1) Like a first attempt doing 3D 2) Professional looking modern logo
-
That's a little harsh.
But personally I really wouldn't care if it was a picture of oBFusCATed beating a kitten with a baby seal, it's a splash screen that gets displayed for a second then goes away on an open source project... It doesn't need to to be AAA stuff.
-
Thanks, but don't worry about it too much. I do not really care if I am told I am completely wrong, as long as I am told why.
I have continued working on the colors - personally, I like colors which are more vibrant, but the reduced transparency in my last post made it too much so. Also, I added a significant blur to the reflection (again, I like sharp images, but I do realize that I am not everyone). Here is my work in progress.
... and with sharpened corners
(http://ngcoding.tech.officelive.com/Images/splash8.png)
(I would have replied a bit earlier, but fuzzy reflections caused the render time to take 5 times as long as before.)
And the bubble? Oddly rotated and sticking out.
Hmm... I agree, but I couldn't find a better spot for it; any suggestions?
I really wouldn't care if it was a picture of oBFusCATed beating a kitten with a baby seal
(So you know, that brings a very "unique" image to mind )
-
Alpha:
Mmm, from my point of view, the logo is much an improvement now, though I still don't like the concept.
The logo is still in background, while most of the picture is taken by that gray brick (aka gravestone).
Could you please try the less "in-your-face" 3D version with logo slightly modified (these newer colors plus reflextion blur, possibly those sharper corners), without the bubble and with text a "little bit" less glossy? I believe it might look way cool, and a version without gray background could be perfect for Start here page (and on other spots as well - webpage, forum logo?).
ouch: ouch
others: What do you think?
-
OK - render in progress (this may take some time).
The logo is still in background, while most of the picture is taken by that gray brick (aka gravestone).
I tried to choose a neutral, non-obtrusive color for the background; is there a different color you would suggest I try?

Please, don't use that "brick and bubble" in next logo proposal - it looks awful.

This is what I'm trying to say. Logo (and text, ok) should be the only 3D objects.
I tried to choose a neutral, non-obtrusive color for the background; is there a different color you would suggest I try?
I think less "in-your-face" 3D version has pretty good background for a splash screen and a version without background or completly white background would be cool for Start here page.
OK - render in progress (this may take some time).
May I ask what software and computer do you use? I am curious what time it takes to make this render.
-
Understood. In case you were wondering, my original idea had been drawn out with the purpose of giving a bit more depth than previous splashes. (It is difficult to tell, but the gray section is not an actual block, but two flat panels meeting a right angle. The only way to see this is to display it on different backgrounds and notice that no edges from the far side are visible through the slight transparency.) What would you think about trying for a "z" pattern by adding a third panel?
My computer has dual 2.40 GHz processors and 4 GB RAM (well actual 3, as it is 32 bit). I am doing modeling and rendering with Blender (http://www.blender.org/) and a little bit of post-processing with either Photoshop or the GIMP (I tried both, and they worked equally well) to re-size (original size is 1920 by 1200), trim, and add the drop shadow. The "block" version with sharp reflections takes about 30-45 minutes. Switching it to blurry reflections pushes the time up to 2.5 hours (I had to push reflection light samples from 18 to 500 in order to prevent artifacts). The "flat" version with sharp reflections takes about 1.5 hours (it has a lot more light interactions). Changing to blurry reflections looks like it will take a bit over 18 hours to render. (I really should have decreased the render size on this to a more manageable size, however, Blender has already been working for some time, and I would prefer not to interrupt it just to change the size.) I posted my .blend file (http://ngcoding.tech.officelive.com/Documents/CBSplash.7z) earlier if you want to take a look at it. Also, when the render is finished, I could upload a newer version if you would like.

I think nice and good looking splashscreen could be based on one of splashscreens listed here (http://www.google.pl/search?tbm=isch&hl=pl&source=hp&biw=1600&bih=1004&q=splashscreen&btnG=Szukaj+obraz%C3%B3w&gbv=2&oq=splashscreen&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&gs_sm=s&gs_upl=0l0l0l1852l0l0l0l0l0l0l0l0ll0l0) (especially Photoshop, Corel Draw or Microsoft ones).
-
I knew you wanted to give the splash screen another "dimension", but when people try this, it usually gets much worse than a "flat" version. That's why all splash screens we see around are more or less "flat".
Your computer is good enough, I didn't know you're using bigger render size, will the quality visibly drop down when you decrease it for example to a half? 18 hours for a preview sound like cruely wasted time. Might my 8-thread i7 920 help you with some rendering? (My PC usually doesn't sleep when I do.) I'd help with the splashscreen itself too, but I'm pretty lame in Blender (though as soon as I find some free time, I plan to learn it as it's damn useful plus free).
//polygon7: I don't think it's a good idea to make full quote of previous post, which is just above yours. It's... redundant.
-
I have been making plans for creating a 2D in Photoshop - if it turns out I will post it.
I guess I forgot to mention that I check the setup (colors, lighting, etc.) with "quick" (5-15 minutes) preview renders at about 5-10% size and no anti-aliasing.
As long as the render is at least the same size as the final splash, there should not be a visible difference. However, from experience large sizes make post-processing effects a lot easier to apply (I do agree that 18 hours is excessive and I will be changing something).
Thanks for offer; I might take you up on that next time I come to a slow render.

On the original topic of this thread, I have created a small set of graphics (http://ngcoding.tech.officelive.com/Documents/resources.7z) for the project wizard within Code::Blocks (based on set B icons). To use, simply extract over
[C::B_SVN]\src\plugins\scriptedwizard\resources
so that the original graphics are overridden.

I suggest put the two lines below the four square.

I really like it and don't mind too much that the logo is a little overlapped. Maybe I would make the logo a bit larger and/or move the smaller text a little lower so it's better centered to the logo. One tiny problem might be the light, as Code:: is quite dark while cks is too shiny... Aaand maybe I'd make the green a bit darker (so it's more grassy) and the yellow a bit lighter (so it's less honey)... but those are all details.
If we don't want any overlapping, I guess there are only two choices: grab the logo to the left or to the bottom.
I believe both versions would need some text shrinking and we are back to current splash screen problem: it has a lot of empty space in the bottom half as ollydbg noted few days ago.
-
P.S.: Can't wait to see new logo in action.

Why do you have H/H++ wizard.png in /fortran? (It appears to be in current svn too.)
Btw it would take a lot of time to replace all old graphics, look for example at sdl-cb.bmp in /templates.

Who made this? :) It would be pretty cool logo for a Win 3.1 program.

Oops... I didn't notice. Do you (or does anyone for that matter) happen to know what font it is using so I can replace the text?
Simplified, mostly 2D (sort of similar to the current splash)... ... with revision number highlight

(Putting the icon under the text made it too tall.)
-
Wow, nice new ideas. I like the first one and the last one the most. Hmmm now you bring too much new to think about. Maybe I won't sleep tonight.
//After wheels in my brain spinned up:
- I think 2D text looks better, hmm.
- The bubble still looks like a smudge on my monitor.
- Can you please move the text a little lower so these two gaps match?
-
Sorry getting back took a bit.
Here is the shifted text. (I originally had it higher so that the version number would have more space.)
Also, I uploaded the psd files (http://ngcoding.tech.officelive.com/Documents/splash2D.7z) so you can try shifting the text with the GIMP or Photoshop (if you have it). (This is possible as the text was added afterwards.)
-
I like this one:
2D text is much better than 3D text.
-
Why do you have H/H++ wizard.png in /fortran?
I edited and uploaded a fixed version (http://ngcoding.tech.officelive.com/Documents/resources2.7z).
-
ollydbg you like that bubble? Interesting.
Alpha when you want more space for version number, you can move the smaller text closer to the Code::Blocks text. I think the gap is too large.
-
ollydbg you like that bubble? Interesting.
I like that bubble, too. It's a requirement to place the version, or SVN revision numer. A logo basically cannot be without that, remember the posting I referenced previously.
-
I was exploring using source code to file up the blank space.
(http://ngcoding.tech.officelive.com/Images/splash21.png) (http://ngcoding.tech.officelive.com/Images/splash22.png)
What about using one of these squared out highlights for the version number instead of the bubble?

-
They are split, no?
At the moment, I prefer the bubble...
-
Okey let's have a bubble.
That source code is quite messy isn't it? Also you changed orientation of the logo and it looks bad again.
I though logo orientation was tweaked enough, rather don't change it, it messes colors and reflection.
-
I like the source code... and prefer a square instead of a bubble...
-

Is this a question for me? (If so, could you explain what you mean.)
(By the way, I think I prefer the bubble as well.)

Agreed; I had started a new file to try the source code version out, but I will be going back to build it off the previous file as soon as I can (blender is currently rendering something else).
I ... prefer a square instead of a bubble...
Any particular style? (For example: the full square; just an angled underline; tab off the bottom; sharp outline; blurred outline; darker; lighter; other...)
-
I mean that squares are "not finished", like if someone cuts them... (I'm sorry, I don't know how to explain better... my english is not good... But you already know that :D )
If they are here to contain the version number, maybe they could be full visible?
-
Sorry if I kept people waiting, I did not want to post until I had something to show for it.
Inserting the code directly into the simplistic splash wreaked havoc on the lighting. The closest I could come to it was by rendering the logo + shadows and the code separately, compositing them afterwards.
(http://ngcoding.tech.officelive.com/Images/splash25.png) (http://ngcoding.tech.officelive.com/Images/splash26.png)
@Everyone: There are now multiple variations in version number highlights (including leaving it blank). Also, there are multiple splash image backgrounds. What combination of the two is your favorite?
@Freem: Your English is not that bad. (It is far better than my French. :))
-

I prefer the rectangle (splash screen on the right). The bubble really feels out of place for me.
-
The reason I am no longer writing anything is that I believe the code in behind completly wrecked the look by bringing too much of "3D" in it.
Code behind the logo looks no better than a punched tape and the part that is readable is quite lame (hell cool, we create a string and call setEnv).
About bubble vs rectangle: the bubble will not ever fit in the picture, as it looks like a coffee drop on a white napkin. On the other hand,
the rectangle is sticking out because it looks like it was added in MS Paint. I still don't get the idea why there must be some special place
for version number, when it can be placed the same way the text is and it won't look any worse.
-
I was exploring using source code to file up the blank space.
(http://ngcoding.tech.officelive.com/Images/splash21.png) (http://ngcoding.tech.officelive.com/Images/splash22.png)
I think the code snippet behind the logo is ugly, I prefer a clean background.
-

I don't think I could have found this comparison, but... It's true.
I don't think you should make it like the bubble, but maybe find a a way between the pure MS-paint and the coffee mark...
I'm not an artist, so, sorry if I don't have many things to say about those logos
@alpha: I think this is harder to learn french than english... "conjugation" (not sure about the word) often mess french people too.
-
I still don't get the idea why there must be some special place
for version number, when it can be placed the same way the text is and it won't look any worse.
As long as there is white space, the version number can, of course, be placed there (like the current splash). However, I also wanted to give the option of a highlight for the number.
I looked at Code::Blocks' previous splash, and tested that style here.
(http://ngcoding.tech.officelive.com/Images/splash27.png) (http://ngcoding.tech.officelive.com/Images/splash28.png)
(I am planning to reduce the blue - make it more gray - and better center it.) What do you think?
With respects to using code in the background, I just selected an arbitrary section from Code::Blocks' source. Does anyone want me to try other variations with the code?
-
Could you put a random svn number in a picture, but without rectangle, without circle ? Just a string like "svn 1234", "v. 09.11"
I think just a number would be enough, the important part of this picture is the logo (the 4 squares) and the string "Code::Blocks".
-
Yeah yeah! Let's not make a "helipad" for version number, simply place it the same way the text is placed and it may look just fine.
On the other hand, this rectangle looks way better than the "mspaint" one, though the color, as you said, not really matches current design.
Another opinion on the source code version: Most of us look in the damn code all days, we don't want it to scare us even on a splash screen. :D
Btw when talking about previous splash screen inspirations, we really need to close this gap a little...
I believe you found better font than those previous splash screens had, but maybe the Code::Blocks label could be a little bit decorated, probably like on the first splash screen.
-
Btw when talking about previous splash screen inspirations, we really need to close this gap a little...
Oops, not again; I keep opening the wrong file without noticing. :?
I added text lighting back in - is it too much/little?

Nice logo ! :)
I think that "SVN" could be smaller, but the logo is really fine even like this. :)
-
Yeah, yeah, it's reaching a high level of coolness. :) 8)
One more try: A bit darker background for splash screen and a white/transparent version for Start here page?
Btw isn't the resolution - 450 x 239 - a bit odd?
-
Apparently Microsoft lost one of the images I uploaded... I re-uploaded it, so that is why the second image has appeared in my previous post.
Background darkened, "SVN" reduced slightly, image size regularized (I was not paying attention to it as I transformed and edited blender's output).

I love this one. I think a rectangle around the "svn xxx" is not necessary.

Agree!
BTW, no much different from the actual one... but still, I like this one better.

I think we got us new splash screen and start here page. :D
-
But we don't have a new release! So it is useless at the moment.

Not a problem, i will use it to patch CB before compiling :D

It is great that you like it.

If you plan to let Code::Blocks generate the version number, you might need one of these.

For anyone who is curious, here (http://ngcoding.tech.officelive.com/Documents/flatSplashRes.7z) are the resources I used to create this splash.
(By the way, if you are wondering why I edited all my previous posts, it is because Microsoft wants to end the service I am using, so I was testing some alternatives.)

Does anyone know how do I replace Start Here page logo? Ok found it, start_here.zip\title_1005.png It fits really well:

...except of a bit messy left and top logo corner.
Btw... I know it's little off topic, but what Microsoft service are you exactly talking about?
Anyway it looks quite good for current icon replacement, isn't it?

You are right; fixed anti-aliasing.

Yes, it rather does. Here (http://ngcoding.tech.officelive.com/Documents/NewLogo.7z) it is packaged as ico and png.

I am using free Microsoft hosting (http://smallbusiness.officelive.com/) for testing web deployment and hosting the files I posted here. However, Microsoft is planning to switch over to paid-only hosting by the end of the year. I looked at Google sites, and although the interface is fine, I do not believe they allow hot-linking.

I archived all the splashes and alternate graphics, and am hosting them on my SkyDrive (see the first post for links).
-
:) I've looked at all those and it's like watching the evolution in action.
-
Yeah, I noticed that as well. :)
