Title: Code::Blocks 8.02 has been released!
Post by: mandrav on February 28, 2008, 10:28:30 pm
Our long awaited release is finally here! Representing the hard work of 14+ developers for more 2+ years since our last official release (and many changes in the roadmap in between), it is finally made available to the general public.

For your convenience, we provide binaries for all platforms Code::Blocks supports:

Binaries for other Linux distros will be made available in the following days. So, without further ado, head over to the downloads (http://www.codeblocks.org/downloads) section and get it while it's hot!

Let me be the first one to say: congratulations.

Out of curiosity, what's the status of this release, is it something of a release candidate, or a final version?

Congrats! :D

EDIT: question: will you support 8.02 with further releases (like 8.02.1) or do you continue with year.month ?

Stable official release.

Only if we need to address important issues with the current release. Otherwise, the next version will be 8.XX. Haven't yet planned which month XX will be though ;). We need some time to celebrate and enjoy our current release first :).

Thanx again C::B Team, very nice Windows installer.

Congratulations, and thanks for everything :D

this is a great step forwards for Code::Blocks.

EDIT: The OS X versions claims it is version "1.0 SVN" (well the splash screen and about dialogs show 8.02 as expected but when you right-click the app and select "get info" you get "1.0 SVN" and more outdated stuff)
afb : time to update your info.plist ;)

Yeah, I noticed this but figured it wasn't important enough to delay the release...
EDIT: mostly since configure doesn't have a clue either: VERSION='1.0svn4918'

Batch building still crashes too, but that bug has been known since like forever.

Congratulation also from my side for the very good work.

Is this release similar to the latest nightly build or are there new features and fixes?

Greetings

Yes, yes, yes, brilliant news.

I been a user of CodeBlocks for just a year,  (DevC++ before), and it's my favourite piece of software on my PC.

Now the only thing to sort out is Comodo Firewall v3 Defense+ screwing up the GDB debugger.

Is codeblocks likely to appear in some mayor Linux distributions now that we have a stable release?

Most Linux distributions needs tarball to build their packages. Or you can say that each distributor should have its own tarball?

(As individual I know where and how fetch sources, but tarball (already bootstrapped) is preffered for distributors, IMHO).

No, I don't say that - I just meant if you were anxious.
Tarball is on the way, not sure how many days though...

(I am also waiting on the tarball, for use with MacPorts)

Code::Blocks 8.02 is now in MacPorts (in addition to codeblocks-devel@1.0_4918)
It is available for Mac OS X (with wxMac) as well as for Darwin/X11 (with wxGTK).

It doesn't seem to know the revision number/date, but I guess that's fairly minor
(the binary package for Mac has a similar problem, as it thinks it is 1.0 svn 4918)

Code: start here
Release 8.02 (unknown date) gcc 4.0.1 Darwin/ANSI

Congratulations, thanks, nice win installer, stable version at last!!!
Finally I can tell my students to use C::B, installations were a nightmare with the nightlies.

Now I don't mind waiting for years for the next release, as long as you don't change the directory structure (I mean, updating==overwriting codeblocks.exe with the nightly).

I am also 2 years registered user and using CB almost in daily base the last 6 months... I had asked many times for a new version, but after finding a good ubuntu repository regularly updated with new svn snapshots I just quited asking... today I opened my CB and the splash screen had "8.2" as version I though "lol what a funny bug" and decided to visit your site just of curiosity ... and WOW!!! A RELEASE FINALLY!

I like your versioning... I liked it when I first saw it at ubuntu and I like it more when I am seeing it here :)
Ty very much for C::B, you are making something that makes others people's life easier... a lot easier! Really thank you :)
The new release will also bring some attendance from windows people finally having a good installer (that was the main reason I was asking for a new release!!!)

Congratulations on this huge accomplishment.

On my Solaris machine, only one change had to be made for a proper build from source.

SquirrelVM.cpp needed to have <string.h> included at the top to define strlen().

SquirrelVM.cpp needed to have <string.h> included at the top to define strlen().

you mean <cstring> and then std::strlen() or use a using directive.

Will check that file and adjust it. Thanks for mentioning.

EDIT :fixed locally, will commit later this week

Hello guys and congrats for your final release. I think it's great news to have the official stable release, but to be honest...the greatest above all is that this project exists and gets more people day after day :D [kyrie yanni...ftou ftou ftou na min to matiasoume :DDD - greek comments goes to Mr. Mandravellos]

I use Fedora 8 and I have installed version 4872. I just run the updates and...well it's not the latest release but it works just fine :) something else guys.

Can you update the "Help > About | License" tab? It shows the GPL v2 and not v3...I know it's not an issue [actually for some could be...]but it's good to have it totally up to date ;)

Also when I installed Code::Blocks for the first time wxWidgets 2.8.4 was installed. I should contact the person who's responsible for Fedora rpms for Code::Blocks to update it to version 2.8.7.

I wish you all the best, keep up the good hard work.

Best Wishes,

Stefanos Sofroniou

Official Windows build : also OK.

I want to congratulate the Code::Blocks team also. I feel so enthusiastic for this step :D.

I would like to propose an idea. Since Ubuntu seems to be the most popular Linux distribution, the new Code::Blocks release could be available into the official repositories (Universe). So, new users could get this useful IDE as easy to issue the famous command

Code
sudo apt-get install codeblocks

I imagine, somebody should joint to the Masters of the Universe (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MOTU) project for do that. I do not know if it is already on the Universe, I beg your pardon if that is the case.

Thanks a lot for this wonderful gift!

super interested ;-) crashes should be fixed.

You can explain it here, but for sure create a bug report at berlios

You're so quick to reply, and I'm so...not.

Okay, I've poked around and I may change my opinion about there being one deep problem that's showing many symptoms...I don't think the symptoms I've seen are related, so I'll just focus on the crash.

Solaris is relatively new to me so I may have done something foolish while building C::B.  Nonetheless, I'll have time tonight to fill a proper bug report.

Its dying words imply that it scanned past the end of the buffer:
Code
/(430): assert "(" failed in at(): i [in child thread]

Here's the svn4935 backtrace, which looks like it wanted to show an assert dialog, but choked before I could see it.

Code

C::B 8.02 was pushed into Fedora's updates-testing repository (you can run "yum --enablerepo=updates-testing update codeblocks" from a terminal session to get the update now)

Yes, Fedora 8 still contains wxGTK 2.8.4 but for Fedora 9 we have already prepared 2.8.7. It is possible that we will make an update for Fedora 8 too when we will not receive any negative feedback.

Mr. Mandrav,

Under Fedora 8, there is an rpm version of Code::Blocks but as far as I know it's a Nightly Build version.

The day I posted my issue here was the day that Fedora Community released lots of updates. One of the updates was Code::Blocks. And to be honest, I saw the "1.0.0-3xxx" version of Code::Blocks and I said "cool :)"

To make it clearer for you here's the link:

http://rpmfind.net/linux/rpm2html/search.php?query=codeblocks (http://rpmfind.net/linux/rpm2html/search.php?query=codeblocks)

Sorry for my delayed response.

Best Regards,

Stefanos_

Hmm, the downloads page (http://www.codeblocks.org/downloads/binaries#linux) suggests that an 8.02 package exists for FC8 :).

Admittedly this package was contributed by Daniel2000 and I haven't tested it myself as I don't use Fedora. But I also have no reason to believe that Daniel2000 put a fake version on the rpm's name ;).

Dear Mandrav,

I have uploaded two screenshots to make things clearer to everyone and for the ones who might want to help a little bit.

Here is the second screenshot:

Who's responsible for RPMs I do not know it :) I would like your advice on that.

Also wxWidgets 2.8.4 is installed on my system and not 2.8.7 that should supposed to be. Though I don't personally think that..that could be the cause of this kind of issue but as I said before your advice would be taken for granted ;) You know better than me.

You are the man mate :D

Keep up the good work.

Regards,

Stefanos_

P.S: People, I would like your advice on a matter of knowledge. I would like to learn how "auto-completion" works, parsers, tokens, linkers, and so forth.
Is it auto-completion or code completion? For example if I press Ctrl+SPACE a drop-down menu appears. How to do call it under programming terms?
I call it just as it seems...a drop-down menu :D Please guys...I would like your valuable feedback on that!

Cheers.

Dear Stefanos,

your version seems to be svn4872 build with wxWidgets 2.8.4.

The license text was changed in svn 4908 from GPLv2 to GPLv3.
The older versions where published under GPLv2, so your version seems to be correct.

On the search page you posted and on the C::B download page Yannis posted there are links to the release 8.02 for FC8 and this rpm's should have the new license text.

Dear Jens,

I would like to thank both of you [Jens you are the second man, Mandrav is THE man :D] for your valuable feedback.

I have downloaded the Fedora tar.gz file and after I uninstalled the svn version I installed this one and seems to work just fine. The thing is that I am afraid to upgrade my wxWidgets. I don't want it to break :D

Anyway, the least I can do is to try. Wish me good luck.

For once again I humbly thank you for your valuable help for this amazing software.

Regards,

Stefanos_

All I want to say is

AWESOME!!!!!

Since I started to use C:B 2 years ago I haven't missed Borland RAD compilers (to me way better than MS Visual ones) and, what's more important, C:B has nothing to envy.

Thank you for this new Release.

There's an entire forum dedicated to this. You'll find some relevant information there, although not well organized (yet).
Here (http://forums.codeblocks.org/index.php/board,18.0.html) and on the Wiki (http://wiki.codeblocks.org/index.php?title=Code::Completion_Rewrite)

Could you make available the import library for the version of wxWidgets that you built this release against (e.g. libwxmsw28u.a)? This would allow others to build plugins that work with the release version rather than having to build their own version. I am in the process of trying to convince my company that cross platform, open source is a good thing and am using wxWidgets and CodeBlocks as the model for future development. We have some wxSmith plugins (very business specific) that we can only use if we build codeblocks from scratch.

I am currently using the 8.02 msw release for this work but will be porting my work to GNU/Linux using my Ubuntu distro soon.

The project is great and the release is so handy to give confidence to my colleagues (rather than presenting a development build).

Link to the DLL directly. GCC supports it and linking is actually a bit faster this way.

Just joined up to say Congratulations on the release. :)

Hopefully, I will stick around and spend a bit more time on the forum.

Thanks! That works well. Now why didn't I find that in the docs...

If you speak of C::B docs, it is normal as it is specific to GCC.
If you speak of C::B docs, I think you're on the bad forum

Nevertheless, very nice fature !

Our long awaited release is finally here! Representing the hard work of 14+ developers for more 2+ years since our last official release (and many changes in the roadmap in between), it is finally made available to the general public.

Hello,

Cool  :D.

Congratulations.

Best wishes,
Michael

Thanks guys. I've moved to Codeblocks on Ubuntu about a month (coming from Visual Studio) and it is awesome.
Great work! I love it.

The Code::blocks development and their team process ought to be studied by business/technology programs as an example of how to do it right.  Code::blocks works so well and is far better than anything we might shell out dollars for, too!  So I will instead heap on some praise and say - congratulations!

Now a question: will the nightly builds be off the 8.02 trunk?  Will the build number be consistent with this?  I'm a little confused and wondering if the nightly build represents what's been released (echoing other similar questions).

nightly builds are 8.02 + new development (features, fixes , ...)
